“Sometimes standing up for yourself can be as si “Sometimes standing up for yourself can be as simple as walking away from a situation that does not support or honor your self-worth.” I found this quote appropriate for a situation I went through this week. I had to let someone know that they did something that was not right and that I had found out about it. While there is nothing that can be done to change how I felt or to rectify the situation, I kept a commitment to myself. The commitment is that I will not let others treat me with disrespect. I can no longer stay in situations where I am not valued nor appreciated. That is one sign that is time to make a career change. If you’ve been at a place for a while and don’t feel heard, recognized or respected for your contributions, it can feel draining, frustrating and hopeless. You may feel anger and resentment each day in this environment. If you are feeling this way at work, let’s start some exploration. Diamond went to the vets today. She does okay with Diamond went to the vets today. She does okay with car rides, but if she goes to the vets or groomers, she always knows. She gets sad and either meows loudly or curls up in a ball. On the way back, she actually enjoys the car ride and if we open the carrier, she likes looking out the window and moving around the carrier. She hates going to the vet, but she makes the best of the situation and is always grateful to be back home and enjoying the car ride. It reminds me of words of wisdom a friend of mine always says. “Someone is sitting in the shade today because s “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” – Warren Buffet That’s the thing about goals, sometimes they can take a while to achieve. Even if it’s a short-term goal, but you’ve been putting it off. Back in 2020, I was training to get my coaching certification. I completed the program in April, but while in the program, I was having a session with one of the other coaches. I told her that one of my goals was to add the career coaching specialty, but I finished the program, months went on and I put it on the back burner. Finally, this year I started working on the certificate in April. I did one assignment and left it alone for weeks. I got some momentum until I had to write an article. I had no idea what to write about so I kept putting it off. Eventually in July, I had a conversation with another coach. We walked through several article topics until I settled on one and I was pleased with the results. Not only did I get an article to submit, but I got an exercise to do with my clients. I was so grateful that I had waited because everything happened in the right time. If I tried this years earlier, I wouldn’t have met the coach who helped me discover this idea. I also wouldn’t have this framework to base my career coaching around. If you don’t accomplish your goals right away, try not to beat yourself up. Things will happen at the right time. These big flowers didn’t grow overnight. They st These big flowers didn’t grow overnight. They started with one tiny seed years ago. When I moved to this place before my daughter was born, I went to a green house and bought these two plants. I didn’t know much about them. They had small white flowers and were nowhere near as tall as they are now. What kept them going? Of course, we all know it’s sun, water, and nutrients in the soil. We could also say it’s resilience. Even after long winters, they come back stronger than ever. What happens when they come back? They make their surroundings beautiful and they help the world around them. They give the bees a place to pollinate. These big blooming flower tree can be a metaphor for your life or your next chapter. The idea or thought of where you want to go and who you want to be is the small seed. Then you take action. You use your tools and you start to grow. One day at a time. After a while, you will bloom and make the world around you more beautiful and a better place simply because you are here. Anger is usually viewed as a negative emotion, but it’s also a signal that something is wrong. When you feel angry, it be from a place of fear or maybe there is a boundary you need to set. Something you need to take care of. Maybe something is going against your values and you feel you have to participate. It could be a variety of things. You have to sit with it and uncover what is behind it. Then make a plan of action. Sometimes it’s a difficult conversation. Sometimes it’s removing yourself from a situation.
